Susan J. Crawford-Young Susan J. Crawford-Young Biography

I am a teacher, Engineer and Visual Artist who lives and works in Southern Manitoba, Canada. I am currently teaching at Red River College – Winkler branch where I teach a variety of subjects from Math and Science to Art. I have research interests in Biology, Imaging and Electronics.

My Master’s thesis was about developing a robotic microscope to get 3D plus timed sequences images of a developing salamander egg. This project is continuing and there is lots to be done on what Dr. Richard Gordon has dubbed the “Google Embryo” project. The idea is to study how an embryo develops so that we can understand the forces that cells experience as they are changed from a general embryo cell into cells of a huge variety of tissues such as nerves, skin and muscle. The theory is that cells respond to forces which cause them to change their cell types and change their chemistry which causes further changes in the cells. Development is all about how cells change physically and chemically do to their position in an embryo’s structure. I am interested in developing tools and doing some measurements of embryonic tissue using model animals such as the axolotl salamander and sea urchins to further this research.

My current teaching subjects are Grade 11 and 12 Maths and Sciences, Art, Family Studies and Anatomy and Physiology. The Maths includes the essentials math, applied, pre-calculus and calculus and the science includes Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Most of my students are adults as I work at an Adult Learning Centre and most of the subjects are self study and students are often at very different places in their courses. I act as a tutor for the students in my subject areas.
